Accident on guided busway

According to the Cambridge News, there was an accident yesterday evening on the guided busway at Buchan Street, Cambridge, when a teenage cyclist was struck by a bus. The ambulance took 46 minutes to arrive.

One aspect of this report doesn't add up. Guided buses don't go along Buchan Street which is a small residential street near King's Hedges Road.

If anyone can clarify what actually happened, I'd be interested to hear. Is it possible that the young person who was injured lived in Buchan Street?

Link to the report here.

  1. It was on the section directly opposite Buchan street where there is a crossing onto orchard park.

  2. Thanks, Emma. That makes sense. Did you actually witness the accident?

  3. The Cambridge News story has been updated this morning (Thurs 27). Makes it clearer that the accident was at "a path near Buchan Street" (and provides additional details, comments from Andy Campbell, etc.).

  5. No think I missed it by a few minutes. The bus that hit him . Was sitting diagonally across the bus way presumably as it h ad swerved to avoid him. That crossing is an accident waiting to happen as you can't see the buses coming. I'm only surprised that more people haven't been hurt.

    1. Thanks, Emma. The paper said it was a teenage cyclist. This is only speculation, but maybe the cyclist was ignoring the traffic signals, or doing deliberate stunt type cycling. The buses along that section of the busway usually have to slow down while the lights change, so maybe the cyclist was at fault.

  6. There are no lights for that crossing on the bus way. There are a set to cross kings hedges road but nothing on the bus way itself at that point. Adding in all the bushes on that side of the road it is impossible to see the buses coming. Something needs to be done to prevent more accidents like this, as a mother of 2 young children I am extremely wary of crossing at that point.

    1. Thanks for clarifying that. Maybe a barrier is needed to stop people shooting straight across the bus track. There is a foot crossing at Histon which has poor sight lines and following an accident they introduced a speed restriction for east bound buses. Perhaps you should contact your county councillor.
